I recommend your state office for the Visually Impaired. The woman who came brought a stand-alone magnifier with a light, and another magnifier with a light (about 4" in diameter). She also suggested putting a rubberband around my shampoo since I can't see which is which in the shower. I have wet MD in my left eye. My right eye is fine, thank God. I need lots of light and brightness. We putting yellow strips of masking tape in front of the stairs and also a light activated by stairs.

I use lots of extra light for all reading. The flashlight on my cell phone is great for help in reading menus in restaurants with dim light

I wear trifocal glasses and have to have bright lighting. I use a magnifier to read small print and a magnifying mirror for makeup.

Adequate or better lighting helps, and I find the Magnifier app on my iPhone to be increasingly helpful.

Great, practical ideas here. I'm getting help and encouragement from my optometrist. The distance-only glasses meant constantly taking them off to see close-up. It was driving me crazy so she prescribed progressive lenses instead. That supports my only fully functional eye.
